Friction fit head mount for Nikon SB900 and SB910 Speedlights

Some time ago I made a video about my little trick/tip for using Manfrotto Nano Clamps to attach speed lights to objects too large to get the Nano Clamp claws around.

Since the video was published on DIY Photography and Peta Pixel I have had a lot of questions about the custom made head mount for my Speed lights that makes a brief appearance in the video.

I designed and built this thing because, when mounting my speed lights on an Umbrella fixture in the conventional way, the head is offset from the centre of the umbrella. Particularly when mounted on a Pocket wizard TT5, as is usually the case for me.

The Problem…

I have since redesigned the piece so that it can be made using standard 1/4″ 20 nuts. I’ve also added a second nut position so that the flash can be mounted with the head in a vertical orientation as well as horizontally.

The solution…

Obviously this is only of use to Nikon SB900 or SB910 owners.
If you’d like one and you have access to a 3D Printer you can buy the STL file from my Store and print your own.
Once printed you will need to add two 1/4″ 20 nuts into recesses in the printed part to finish it. The recesses are a snug fit so may require squeezing the nuts into place with a pair of pliers.

Combine this with an umbrella spigot / Swivel for the set up shown in the photos above.
